As winter draws to an end, midwesterners are so regularly teased with beautiful spring weather for split seconds while mostly dealing with cold temperatures. However, knowing spring is on its way is your cue for window maintenance, and keeping your windows in good condition for the change in seasons is important for aesthetics, function, and energy conservation. Consider some of the few tips below!

First Things First, Inspect Your Weatherstripping

While it’s easy to overlook window weatherstripping, it should be the first detail you check for when checking your windows amidst changing seasons. You will find the window weather seal between the sash and the window panes. Window weatherstripping is placed in that location to block outside air from coming in and is an important detail of your energy saving windows. It may be likely that winter weather may have caused damage to the window weather seal, so check your windows for any signs of cracking or deterioration that may have compromised the airtight seal. Condensation on windows can also be a problem; if moisture forms around the framing material, it can cause mold growth, which will loosen the window weather seal. Age can cause everything to fall apart, including window weatherstripping. This is often because older windows will have outdated materials and methods of protection that are subpar compared to the materials and methods used nowadays.

Keep Your Window Glass Clean

Naturally, you will want your windows nice and clean for spring, but clean windows will serve a higher purpose than just a clear view. During the dreary days of winter, dirt will build up on and around your windows causing surface deterioration. The window tracks can also become dirty and cause your windows to stick when opening and closing them. First, clear loose dirt away from the window tracks with a brush or vacuum cleaner. Use soap and water to thoroughly clean your windows, and remove any additional grime stuck to your windows. To protect your warranty, make sure that the soap you use is recommended by the manufacturer. After washing your window tracks, lubricate them so that they open and close smoothly. While cleaning, make it a point to do a window inspection as well. If you are unable to restore your windows to their original beauty, or if they’re too old, it might be time to replace them.

Make Sure Your Window Hardware is Working Properly

Hurray! Spring is almost here! Complete a window inspection now and be ready for the next warm day when you can enjoy airing out the house with open windows. Single-hung and double-hung windows use a cam lock, so check to see if the cam lock pulls the window sashes together well. Your single-hung and double-hung windows will also have a lift handle, or rail to use when closing the window, enabling the cam lock to shut tightly. Operate the crank handle if your window has one, as they are great for opening and closing windows when they work right. Open and close every type of window you have to see if they are operating properly and while you’re at it, check the window tracks and window springs. If they catch here and there or are difficult to open and close, you may have to hire window maintenance services to replace or repair the hardware. However, it’s always best to call and describe the issues to a trusted window maintenance company. It is always possible that lubricating window tracks and additional hardware will be all that is needed to fix your window’s problem.
