Does Door Systems Use Recycled Garage Doors? Yes, and Here’s Why!

Randia Wainwright • March 30, 2022

Recycled garage doors are safe, less expensive than a full garage door replacement, and environmentally friendly. These are facts. But boy did we start a debate on social media! Who knew recycled garage doors would be such a hot topic?

We’re here to tell the truth about recycled garage doors and why they make sense in certain circumstances. Keep reading to find out the top five reasons to use or consider using recycled garage doors.

#1. Recycling Garage Door Sections is Environmentally Friendly

Making the world a better place, or our little corner of it, has always been a long-standing goal of Door Systems. We care about our community, our residents, and our future generations. That’s why using recycled garage doors is a GOOD option when only sections of a garage door need to be replaced. Replacing one or two sections keeps unnecessary items out of our landfills…and…it keeps the green in your pocket!

Fixing a garage door at a fair price will allow more homeowners to act quickly - The result? Less air going in-and-out of your home due to cracks and a garage door that struggles to close or won’t close all the way. The less air escapes, the less energy is used to heat and cool your residence. We are conscious of the carbon footprint we leave on the world, and we are committed to providing our customers with the best options available.

#2. Sometimes You Don’t Need a New Garage Door…You Just Need a Section Replaced

The wear and tear on garage doors is not created equal. The bottom sections of garage doors break down quicker than top sections. So, sometimes an entire garage door doesn’t need to be replaced. Sometimes just a section or two sections of a garage door need to be replaced.

Additionally, many older garage doors can be in great shape but require a section replacement. If these older garage doors are no longer being manufactured, using a recycled garage door section is often the most cost-effective way to move forward.

We’re garage door professionals. We won’t overcharge you or try to convince you that you need a new garage door if you only need a section replaced. We leave the slick selling to the fly-by-night overhead door companies. They’re out to make a buck. We’re out to make lifelong customers.

#3. We NEVER Use Recycled Springs or Tracks

This is worth repeating…We NEVER use recycled springs or tracks. Never. Ever.

The only thing that is used in our recycling process is the garage door sections. Torsion springs take the brunt of raising and lowering your garage door. They have a predictable life span as each are rated on a determined amount of completed cycles. Recycling springs wipes out their history and leaves a lot to the unknown.

Tracks keep your garage doors aligned and secure when moving up and down. Tracks that are not installed correctly, are bent, or defected in anyway, can cause your garage door to become unstable. Transferring torsion springs and tracks across garage doors is not only irresponsible, but also dangerous. A broken spring or malfunctioning track can cause your garage door to coming crashing down, causing injury to an unsuspecting person or damage to your property.

We believe in safety first. The hardware we use will ALWAYS be NEW.

#4. Our Recycled Garage Door Sections are Steel Backed for the Highest Quality

When it comes to garage doors and steel, there are three types. Each offers different quality levels and tiers of longevity.

The first type is commonly referred to as “one-layer construction.” These are basic garage doors, non-insulated and hollow. This type of garage door is not used in our recycling process.

The second type is commonly referred to as “vinyl back.” This type of garage door is a two-layer constructed door and semi-insulated. It’s a step above the first type but it’s not the best. We do have a very limited supply of non-insulated and vinyl back used doors. If we recommend used vinyl or non-insulated, it would be because the manufacturer of the garage door is out of business and new sections are no longer available.

The third type is commonly referred to as “steel-back.” Garage doors that fall within this category are steel on the inside and outside and are always insulated. Their three-layer construction makes them top-of-the-line, durable, and of the highest quality.

Door Systems only uses steel-back garage doors in their recycling process. We want to provide the best quality products to our customers. We don’t recycle cheap or damaged garage door sections. We don’t skimp on what matters most. That’s why we’re the best.
