Garage Door Styles and Materials for Exterior Home Design

admin • August 19, 2016

With today’s garage door designs, homeowners have numerous options to create a stylistic impact for the exterior of their home. Usually you don’t realize how many garage door styles and options you have available until you speak with a garage door company and see their catalogs! To help you avoid being overwhelmed with options and to help narrow down your choices, here is a breakdown of the garage door styles and materials available to you.

Traditional Garage Door Styles

Traditional garage door styles have a simpler design with three panel designs available with the option to add garage door windows. The three panel designs include two long panels, three medium panels, or four square panels placed horizontally on the door. The materials commonly available for traditional garage doors are steel and natural wood. Most garage door suppliers have preset factory color options available, but you can also request custom colors or paint the doors yourself with exterior paint. You can choose to skip insulation or add polystyrene or polyurethane insulation.

Contemporary Garage Door Styles

Contemporary garage door styles allow for greater customization in the garage door design you are aiming for. The styles can vary widely from different windows, pane lengths, materials, and more. Generally, there are three types of contemporary styles: aluminum and glass, steel with the options to add wood or stucco grain, and natural wood. Depending on the garage door supplier, they will have the standard insulation options listed under traditional or they will have specialty insulation for the custom made contemporary door styles.

Carriage Garage Door Styles

By far the most popular of the garage door styles, carriage garage doors are beautiful and timeless with a variety of color and wood designs. Most carriage garage doors feature custom cut and classic window designs, but you can get your carriage door without windows as well. There are two main materials available for carriage styles – wood and steel. Wood is definitely the more authentic route, but the steel can be made to look like faux wood. The wood and faux wood come in a variety of stain shades, but other popular colors for carriage doors are white and rich black.

Carriage garage door styles feature unique panes ranging from six to eight, or two large panes with other design details to break up the space. Some carriage doors look like elegant barn doors with the classic Z across the front, an X across each pane, or a diagonal bar across each large pane. The most beautiful detail, however, are the handles. The design of the handles is absolutely historic and timeless with a few options to choose from.
