Does Door Systems Use Subcontractors?

Randia Wainwright • May 12, 2021

When you hire a company to complete any kind of job around your home or business, you might wonder, “who is actually doing the work?” You may assume that the workers are employed by the company you’ve decided to do business with. But did you know that they might be subcontractors?

The use of subcontractors to complete home improvement or construction projects is common, especially for painters, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, roofers, etc. Many commercial garage door companies also use subcontractors. While it might not matter as much for some jobs, your garage door is the largest moving object in your home. And problems with your garage doors can quickly become safety issues. At Door Systems, Inc., we believe it’s critical to have expert professionals completing this work. That’s why we don’t use subcontractors on our garage door projects. Our employees are garage door specialists. They have the highest level of training and we are confident they’ll do the job right for our valued customers.

Why We Are Not a Fan of Subcontracting

When you choose a garage door company who uses subcontractors, the company you talk to is referred to as a contractor. The basic definition is that a contractor performs work under a contract. The contractor is usually the person or company who has direct contact with the customer (home or business owner.) The contractor hires subcontractors to perform the actual work. A subcontractor provides labor or services but does not have a direct contact with the home or business owner. They also don’t receive the benefits and training that come from being an employee.

At Door Systems, Inc., we choose to hire and train employees, rather than using subcontractors. We believe that, while using subcontractors may benefit a company, this arrangement does NOT benefit you, the customer. With subcontractors, there is no guarantee of the quality of the work and we have very high standards. We have built our reputation on offering timely work, outstanding workmanship, and exceptional customer service. In order to maintain our high standards of quality, we have chosen not to subcontract out any of our jobs. When you hire Door Systems, you can rest assured that your work will be performed by garage door specialists we have trained to ensure all installation and repairs meet, or exceed, factory standards.

How Does Subcontracting Affect Efficiency?

Timeliness is crucial when it comes to commercial garage door repair or installation. If your garage door isn’t working, you don’t want to sit around and wait for your repair technician to show up. Commercial garage door companies who only use employees have the advantage of knowing a technician will show up on time and do the job quickly and correctly. If you want to be sure your garage door is repaired efficiently and on time, hire a garage door repair company like Door Systems that has employees ready to deploy.

What Are Other Disadvantages of Subcontracting?

Another disadvantage of a garage door company using subcontractors is their level of commitment. While most subcontractors are qualified to do their jobs, they don’t have the same motivation to provide excellent service. They will probably never see the customer again and, to maximize their revenue, they need to move on to the next job as soon as possible. When it comes to commercial garage door repair services, you want to be sure you’re dealing with a trained technician with the commitment to do the job right.

How Can I Tell If a Garage Door Company is Using Subcontractors?

The first step to identify if a garage door company is using subcontractors is to ask them when you first call to inquire about a service. This is the only way to know before the technician shows up to your home or business.

Once the garage door installer shows up at your door, it is pretty easy to identify if they are a subcontractor or an employee. If the tech is an employee, they will be easy to identify by the signage on the vehicle and most will have some type of uniform with the company’s logo. In today’s more casual dress codes, it typically will be a polo or nice shirt with the logo. If it is a subcontractor, the vehicle may or may not have signage and the tech will be wearing a different company’s logo, or no identifying logo at all.
